I want to talk about a pattern I keep watching play out, because I don’t think the industry has fully reckoned with what it means.
Karpathy posts a thought about how LLMs should have persistent memory. Some folks at OpenAI publish related work. Within a week or two, the idea has a name everyone’s using. Within a month, there are half a dozen open source projects taking real swings at it. Within six weeks, one of them has gone viral, three of them have raised money, and the “right way” to do agentic memory has effectively been established by the project that got there first with the cleanest demo.
Six weeks. From “interesting idea” to “established standard.”
I built one of these myself, actually — a tool called stele that implements agentic memory natively in Postgres. It’s not the only approach, it’s not the most popular approach, but it exists, it works, and I shipped it inside a single arc of that cycle. I wasn’t first to the idea. Almost nobody who’s working on this stuff is “first.” But you don’t need to be first. You need to be in the window.
This is the part of the AI moment I don’t see enough people writing about: the innovation cycle has compressed from years to weeks, and that changes the shape of every competitive question.
What changed#
The traditional model of how a tech idea matures looked something like this: somebody publishes a paper, somebody else builds a reference implementation a year later, a startup forms two years after that, the first real product ships another eighteen months after that. Total elapsed time from idea to “you can actually use this in production” — three to five years.
That model is dead. Here’s what replaced it:
Somebody publishes a thread. Within seventy-two hours, three people have working prototypes. Within two weeks, one of those prototypes has a thousand GitHub stars. Within four weeks, there’s a startup, a Discord, and a documentation site. Within six weeks, the “right way to do X” has effectively been decided by whoever shipped the most polished version in that window.
The reason this works now is the same reason vibe coding works at all: the cost of building a credible v1 has dropped by an order of magnitude. A weekend of an experienced developer plus an agent equals what used to be a quarter of work for a small team. So when an idea catches, dozens of people can chase it simultaneously, and the field of “people who built a working version” goes from one or two early adopters to twenty.
Why first-viral wins#
The thing that has me chewing on this is the first-viral-wins dynamic. It used to be that being first to a working implementation gave you maybe a six-month head start before the next entrant caught up. That head start is now measured in weeks at most. But within those weeks, the project that goes viral first locks in something that’s actually durable: the mental model of how the problem should be solved.
Once a community has agreed that the right way to do agentic memory looks like X, every subsequent project gets compared to X. Either you copy X’s design (in which case you’re behind), or you do something different (in which case you have to justify the deviation, which is a much harder fight).
This is the same dynamic that made React win the front-end framework wars — not because it was technically the best, but because it shaped how everyone thought about UI components. The mental model is the moat. And in the current cycle, mental models get locked in inside a six-week window.
If you’re trying to ship in this space, that has implications:
- “We’ll do it better than them in six months” is not a strategy. By six months, the conversation has moved on.
- Polish at v1 matters more than feature completeness at v3. The version that gets discovered first sets the standard.
- The marketing and content layer is part of the product. A great library nobody hears about loses to a decent library with a great launch.
What this means if you’re not chasing virality#
Here’s the part where I want to talk to the enterprise crowd, because I know some of you are reading this thinking “I don’t care about gold rushes, I care about boring software that runs for ten years.”
That’s fair. And honestly, the six-week land grab isn’t the right game for most enterprises to be playing. You don’t need to be the first person to ship an agentic memory framework. You need to pick the right one to bet on once the dust settles.
But you do need to understand the cycle, because it changes how you evaluate the field. Two things to internalize:
First, today’s version 1 is way more complete than version 1s used to be. When I see an open source project at v0.3 that’s eight weeks old, my old instinct was to dismiss it as too immature to take seriously. That instinct is wrong now. An eight-week-old project today has been through more iterations, with more eyes, against more real-world workloads, than a two-year-old project from 2019. The maturity curve is steeper. Don’t read the version number; read the code, the issues, and the community.
Second, the established players in any given AI space are going to be obvious within months, not years. If you wait a year before picking a vendor for an emerging category, you’re not being conservative — you’re being late to a decision the rest of the industry already made. The window between “this category is forming” and “this category has obvious winners” is much shorter than your procurement process was designed for.
My honest read#
I’m not trying to be the guy hyping this up. I’ve spent twenty years watching tech cycles, and a lot of them are noise. This one is different in a specific way: not because the technology is more important than other waves, but because the speed of the cycle is fundamentally different.
A year from now, half the projects I have open in tabs right now will be dead. The other half will have either gone viral and become the standard, or quietly become real production tools used by serious companies. I can’t tell you which half is which yet. Neither can anyone else honestly. But I can tell you that the people who are going to be writing the post-mortems on this period are the ones currently shipping, currently iterating, currently in the arena.
If you’re sitting on the sidelines waiting for the dust to settle before you build anything, the dust isn’t going to settle. The dust is the new weather. You either learn to work in it or you watch other people stake their claims while you wait for clarity that isn’t coming.
So if you’ve got an idea — ship it this weekend. Worst case, it’s an ugly baby and you learn something. Best case, you’re inside the window when the standard gets set.
There’s a lot of gold in the ground right now. It’s not going to be there forever.
